- By road from Srinagar: the highway is 434 km and is usually open from about May to November or December.

Allow an overnight stop on either highway. The opening dates depend on snow clearance each year, so ask us before you fix a road journey.
When to go to Ladakh
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| May to September | Both highways are usually open and the main sights are reachable. June to September is the most reliable window by road. |
| October to April | Colder, with the highways closed for part or all of this period. Travel is mainly by air and fewer services run. |
Leh is at high altitude. Give yourself time to acclimatise before anything strenuous, and speak to a doctor first if you have a heart, lung or blood-pressure condition.
Most road trips from the south start in Manali.
