According to the ancient Indian Puranas, the land of initial settlement was called Krodadesa which later became Kodavu. The place has several names like Kodava Nadu or Kodagu also called Coorg is in the state of Karnataka nested in the Western Ghats. It is a popular tourist destination and one of the least populated places in Karnataka.
The district of Coorg has has 3 wildlife sanctuaries named Brahmagiri, Talakaveri and Pushpagiri and also the Nagarhole National park which is called Rajiv Gandhi National Park too.
Places to see :
- Raja Seat: This spot was a favourite place of recreation for the Rajas . It is built on a high level ground with a commanding view of the cliffs and valleys.
- Madikeri Fort: This fort was first built by Mudduraja in the 17th century. There is also a palace inside the fort.There is a famous Lord Ganesha temple known as “Kote ganapathi” just at the main entrance of the fort.
- Omkareshwara Temple: Located at the heart of the Town, Omkareshwara temple was built by king Lingarajendra in 1820. The temple has both Islamic and Gothic styles of architecture, built around a central pool.
